We are looking for a skilled React Native Engineer to take end-to-end ownership of a live consumer mobile application built with React Native, TypeScript, and Expo. The application has supported significant user growth, and the next milestone is scaling to one million users while delivering a seamless, reliable, and high-performance mobile experience.
This role goes beyond feature development. You will own the entire mobile development lifecycle, including architecture, implementation, automated testing, releases, performance optimisation, and production support. You will focus on improving conversion rates, reducing crashes, accelerating app performance, and simplifying critical user journeys across a wide range of devices and network conditions.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with product thinking, excellent UI/UX judgment, and a proactive approach to delivering measurable business outcomes.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
1. End-to-End Mobile App Ownership
- Design, develop, test, release, and maintain the React Native application.
- Manage frequent releases, including two to three builds per week, and implement over-the-air (OTA) updates and hotfixes.
- Take ownership of production support, incident resolution, and continuous application improvement.
- Identify opportunities to simplify the codebase, improve maintainability, and eliminate unnecessary complexity.
2. Quality Engineering and Automated Testing
- Establish and maintain automated testing practices using Jest and React Native Testing Library.
- Develop end-to-end test flows using Maestro or Detox for critical user journeys, including login, address management, prescription uploads, cart, payments, and order tracking.
- Integrate automated tests into pull request and release workflows.
- Validate OTA updates in staging environments before production deployment.
- Monitor application stability, investigate crashes, and resolve production issues without relying on a separate QA team.
3. Performance and Conversion Optimisation
- Improve key product metrics, including install-to-first-order conversion, repeat purchase rate, checkout drop-off, crash-free sessions, and cold-start performance.
- Optimise application responsiveness, navigation, rendering, and API interactions.
- Ensure search, cart, checkout, payment, and other critical flows remain fast and reliable.
- Use analytics, session replays, conversion funnels, and crash reports to identify issues and drive measurable improvements.
4. Core User Journey and UI/UX
- Build intuitive, frictionless experiences across search, product substitutions, prescription uploads, address selection, cart, payment, and live order tracking.
- Design clear loading, error, and recovery states to prevent users from reaching dead ends.
- Collaborate with Product and Design teams to improve usability, simplify workflows, and increase conversion.
- Develop accessible interfaces with readable typography, large touch targets, clear language, and screen-reader support.
- Ensure the application accommodates elderly users, first-time smartphone users, and users with varying levels of digital literacy.
5. Performance Across Devices and Networks
- Optimise the application for low-end Android devices and unreliable or slow network connections.
- Implement adaptive performance strategies based on device capabilities and network conditions.
- Optimise image sizes, animations, payloads, and rendering performance for different device tiers.
- Profile application performance on budget smartphones and resolve memory, rendering, and startup bottlenecks.
- Maintain a consistent user experience across supported devices and network conditions.
6. Location Accuracy and Platform Architecture
- Implement and improve address selection, geolocation, and map-pin accuracy to support reliable deliveries.
- Collaborate with backend engineers to develop Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) and Server-Driven UI (SDUI) capabilities.
- Enable dynamic updates to screens, content, and offers without requiring frequent app releases.
- Contribute to mobile architecture decisions that support scalability, maintainability, and rapid product iteration.
7. Analytics, Integrations, and AI-Assisted Development
- Integrate analytics, session replay, crash reporting, and marketing tools such as PostHog, Firebase, Sentry, and MoEngage.
- Implement push notifications, deep linking, user segmentation, and in-app campaigns where required.
- Use AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot to accelerate development while maintaining code quality, test coverage, and engineering standards.
- Support related applications, including store and rider apps, when required to improve the end-to-end order experience.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- 3–6 years of experience building and shipping React Native applications on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
- Experience working on consumer applications with 100,000 or more active users.
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript, React Native, and modern mobile application development practices.
- Knowledge of React Native New Architecture, native modules, Reanimated, navigation, gestures, and performance profiling.
- Hands-on experience improving application stability, screen performance, checkout conversion, and responsiveness on low-end devices.
- Production experience with Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) and Server-Driven UI (SDUI) architectures.
- Experience integrating analytics, session replay, crash reporting, and marketing SDKs.
- Familiarity with Expo, EAS, OTA update workflows, and mobile release management.
- Experience with automated testing tools such as Jest, React Native Testing Library, Maestro, or Detox.
- Strong understanding of mobile UI/UX principles, accessibility, and user-centred design.
- Ability to use native Android debugging and profiling tools, including Kotlin, Logcat, and Android Profiler.
- Experience using AI coding assistants effectively throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to take ownership from initial design through production support.
