Company Description

At Power Integrations, we develop innovative semiconductor technologies that power energy-efficient solutions used around the world. From consumer electronics and industrial applications to electric vehicles and renewable energy systems, our products help customers solve increasingly complex power conversion challenges.
Our technologies make electronic devices and energy systems more efficient worldwide. Employees collaborate with talented engineers, business leaders, and operations teams on products that directly affect our customers and our business.

Motivation for the Job

As Power Integrations continues to advance high-voltage silicon and wide-bandgap semiconductor technologies, accurate device modelling has become increasingly critical to enabling first-time-right product development and accelerating innovation. The Device Modeling Engineer plays a key role in bridging device physics, characterisation, and circuit design by developing predictive models that support technology development, product definition, and customer success.
This position offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge power semiconductor technologies, including GaN-based devices, while collaborating with cross-functional teams driving the next generation of energy-efficient power conversion solutions. The successful candidate will help shape our modelling methodology, improve design accuracy, and enable robust product performance across a wide range of applications.

Job Description

The Device Modeling Engineer is responsible for the development, validation, and release of accurate device models and model libraries for silicon (Si) and wide-bandgap (WBG) power semiconductor technologies. This role supports technology development, product design, and new product introduction by ensuring that simulation models accurately represent device behaviour across electrical, thermal, and environmental operating conditions.
Working closely with device engineering, IC design, product engineering, test engineering, and applications teams, the engineer will define characterisation methodologies, extract model parameters from measurement data, develop compact and electro-thermal models, and validate simulation results against silicon measurements. The role requires strong expertise in semiconductor device physics, modelling methodologies, and power device characterisation, particularly for high-voltage and GaN technologies.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, validate, and release compact device models and model libraries for Si and WBG (GaN) power technologies.
  • Create SPICE and behavioural models suitable for device-level, circuit-level, and system-level simulations.
  • Ensure models accurately capture static, dynamic, transient, switching, and thermal behaviour across operating conditions.
  • Design and execute electrical and thermal characterisation plans to support model extraction and validation.
  • Perform parameter extraction and model correlation across process corners, temperature ranges, voltage extremes, and application use cases.
  • Conduct device-level and circuit-level simulations to evaluate model accuracy and identify discrepancies between simulation and measured data.
  • Collaborate with device, IC design, product engineering, test engineering, and applications teams to ensure modelling solutions meet development and customer requirements.
  • Support development of next-generation GaN and high-voltage technologies through predictive modelling and simulation.
  • Contribute to reliability investigations, failure analysis activities, technology assessments, and design reviews.
  • Develop and improve modelling workflows, automation tools, parameter extraction methodologies, and validation processes.
  • Maintain modelling documentation, version control practices, and model release standards to ensure high-quality deployment across engineering teams.
  • Provide technical support for key customer engagements requiring model correlation, verification, or customisation.

Skills Required

  • Deep understanding of semiconductor device physics, including silicon and GaN power devices.
  • Strong expertise in compact model development, parameter extraction, and model validation.
  • Experience with high-voltage power device characterisation, switching measurements, and thermal analysis.
  • Proficiency with SPICE-based simulation environments, including Cadence Spectre or equivalent EDA tools.
  • Knowledge of electro-thermal modelling, behavioural modelling, and power semiconductor parasitics.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills.
  • Experience developing automated modelling, validation, or characterisation workflows using scripting tools such as Python, MATLAB, or similar.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Background Desired

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Semiconductor Physics, Microelectronics, or a related field.
  • Typical experience:
    • Ph.D. with 3+ years of relevant industry experience, or
    • M.S. with 6+ years of relevant industry experience, or
    • B.S. with 8+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in semiconductor device modelling for silicon and/or wide-bandgap technologies.
  • Experience with GaN power devices strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical and thermal characterisation of high-voltage semiconductor devices.
  • Proven ability to develop and validate models for product development and technology qualification.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams and supporting product development programmes from concept through production.
