Director, Data and Platform

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director, Data and Platform based in United States.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role responsible for shaping data architecture, platform infrastructure, and DevOps for a high-leverage AI engineering team.
You will own the full data lifecycle, from ingestion and transformation through extracts, reporting, and stakeholder-facing analytics.
The role combines architecture, software development, infrastructure, and people leadership, with direct reports from the start.
You will establish technical standards while personally building and shipping production-grade systems.
Working closely with AI engineering, product, research, and business leaders, you will align technical investments with strategic priorities.
The environment is small, fast-moving, and highly collaborative, offering substantial ownership and the opportunity to build systems and teams from the ground up.
Your work will help create reliable, scalable data and AI infrastructure in a technology-driven healthcare environment.

• Own the end-to-end data architecture, including data ingestion, ETL and transformation, extracts, reporting, and BI layers, ensuring data remains accurate, timely, reliable, and trusted.

• Lead the architecture and operation of DevOps and infrastructure supporting AI engineering, covering systems from ingestion through serving.

• Establish technical direction, architecture standards, and engineering practices across data infrastructure, pipelines, transformation logic, platform reliability, and observability.

• Design, build, deploy, and operate production-grade systems, while continuing to write and ship code personally.

• Develop infrastructure that is scalable, stable, observable, and maintainable without extensive manual intervention.

• Build and lead the data and platform organization, including hiring, team development, day-to-day leadership, and technical mentorship.

• Mentor engineers across architecture, data design, DevOps, and platform engineering practices.

• Partner with AI engineering leadership to align platform investments with product and research priorities.

• Translate business and executive priorities into practical data strategy and architecture decisions, clearly communicating technical trade-offs and their implications.

• Collaborate across engineering, architecture, product, research, and business teams to ensure platform investments support organizational goals.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience architecting and building production platforms; candidates with strong relevant experience but fewer years may also be considered.

• Proven hands-on ownership of data architecture across ingestion, ETL, transformation, extracts, reporting, and BI.

• Strong DevOps experience, including designing, deploying, operating, and scaling production systems and infrastructure.

• Demonstrated ability to write and ship production code rather than focusing solely on architecture documentation or system design.

• Hands-on experience with modern data technologies such as Spark, Kafka, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, Postgres, and/or MySQL.

• Experience handling and protecting sensitive PHI/PII data, including appropriate detection and data-management practices.

• Practical experience with GitOps workflows, Kubernetes, and cloud infrastructure such as AWS or equivalent platforms.

• Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex architectural decisions into actionable information for engineers, architects, and non-technical leaders.

• Experience mentoring engineers in architecture, data design, DevOps, and/or platform engineering.

• Previous people-management experience or demonstrated readiness to lead direct reports.

• Comfort working in a small, fast-paced environment where responsibilities span multiple technical areas.

• Experience with AI/ML data platforms, vector databases such as Qdrant, Pinecone, or Weaviate, healthcare or other regulated data environments, or greenfield platform development is a plus.

• Competitive compensation: Base salary range of $220,000–$260,000 USD.
