This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Engineer, Source Code: Repository Services (Ruby) based in Canada.

As a Backend Engineer, you will contribute to the development and evolution of large-scale repository services powering a widely used software development platform. You will take ownership of backend features from initial requirements and technical design through implementation, deployment, and production monitoring. Working primarily with Ruby and modern backend technologies, you will build secure, scalable, and maintainable services that support millions of users. You will collaborate closely with Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, and Security teams to deliver reliable solutions. The role offers significant technical autonomy, opportunities to influence architectural decisions, and continuous learning alongside experienced engineers. Within a remote-first and asynchronous environment, you will help shape the future of software development while leveraging AI tools to improve engineering productivity.

Accountabilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and deliver backend features and improvements, taking ownership of projects from initial problem clarification through production deployment and follow-up.
  • Build and maintain backend applications and services using Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Go, or other modern programming languages.
  • Develop and maintain APIs, background jobs, integrations, and modular service components to support repository-related functionality.
  • Design and optimize data models, database migrations, indexes, and query performance to ensure efficient and reliable data processing.
  • Write secure, scalable, maintainable, and observable code that meets high standards of performance and operational reliability.
  • Implement and improve automated testing strategies, including unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end testing where appropriate.
  • Participate in code reviews and technical design discussions, providing constructive feedback focused on correctness, maintainability, security, performance, and operational risks.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot build, testing, deployment, and production issues, investigating failures and implementing appropriate solutions.
  • Identify technical debt, architectural limitations, and opportunities for improvement, proposing practical changes to strengthen backend systems.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and operational support activities according to the team's ownership and service requirements.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Frontend Engineers, Infrastructure specialists, and Security teams to translate requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Use AI-powered development tools as part of daily engineering workflows, validating generated code and ensuring its quality, security, and reliability.
  • Contribute to engineering best practices, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement within a distributed development team.

Requirements:

  • Professional experience developing and delivering production-grade backend applications and services.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including programming, API development, database management, automated testing, debugging, and performance optimization.
  • Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or another modern backend programming language, with the ability to adapt to different technologies and development environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage features throughout their lifecycle, from requirements clarification and implementation to deployment and production follow-up.
  • Strong understanding of backend architecture, modular design, service boundaries, and the impact of system coupling on maintainability and scalability.
  • Practical knowledge of security, reliability, performance optimization, and operational risk management.
  • Experience writing maintainable code and contributing to collaborative development practices, including Git workflows, code reviews, and automated testing.
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a remote, asynchronous, and globally distributed environment.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound technical judgment, and recognize when additional guidance or collaboration is needed.
  • Practical familiarity with AI-assisted development tools, including the ability to review, validate, debug, and improve AI-generated code.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, curiosity, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Nice to have:

  • Experience developing and operating production Go services, APIs, concurrent applications, or gRPC-based systems.
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud deployment environments.
  • Experience with Rust, particularly in systems engineering, security, performance optimization, or platform development.
  • Knowledge of PostgreSQL, database schema evolution, caching mechanisms, queues, messaging systems, and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience implementing observability solutions using metrics, logs, distributed traces, dashboards, and alerts.
  • Previous contributions to modular monoliths, bounded contexts, shared components, or independently operated backend services.

Benefits:

  • Fully remote working environment, offering flexibility to work from eligible locations around the world.
  • Competitive compensation and equity-based rewards.
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP).
  • Comprehensive benefits supporting physical health, financial security, and overall well-being.
  • Flexible paid time off to support work-life balance.
  • Parental leave benefits.
  • Growth and Development Fund to support professional learning and career advancement.
  • Access to Team Member Resource Groups, fostering inclusion, collaboration, and community.
  • Opportunities to work alongside experienced engineers on large-scale, impactful software infrastructure.
  • Continuous learning through code reviews, technical discussions, and collaborative engineering practices.
  • Opportunity to integrate AI-powered tools into everyday development workflows and contribute to engineering innovation.
  • Inclusive working culture that values diverse perspectives, autonomy, transparency, and continuous improvement.
