This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior BESS Inverter Performance Engineer based in the United States.
As a Senior BESS Inverter Performance Engineer, you will play a key role in improving the performance, reliability, and operational efficiency of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). You will investigate complex inverter-related issues, identify root causes, and coordinate corrective actions with technology vendors and engineering teams. Your work will involve evaluating software, firmware, control logic, hardware, and grid-related factors to ensure optimal system performance. You will also oversee retrofit implementation across multiple sites, monitoring deployment progress, validation results, risks, and resolution milestones. Working in a collaborative, innovation-driven renewable energy environment, you will partner with technical stakeholders to enhance system reliability and support continuous improvement. This remote opportunity offers the chance to contribute to large-scale energy storage projects and accelerate the transition toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
Accountabilities
- Investigate, prioritize, and drive corrective actions for inverter-related performance issues across operational battery energy storage projects.
- Conduct root cause analyses using operational data, event logs, site evidence, engineering principles, and technical reviews to distinguish between software, firmware, controls, hardware, design, and power system issues.
- Collaborate with inverter vendors to establish corrective actions, define retrofit requirements, develop implementation plans, and agree on validation criteria and deployment schedules.
- Maintain comprehensive vendor issue logs documenting investigation status, root causes, corrective actions, validation results, outstanding risks, and final resolution.
- Review firmware updates, software releases, design changes, and proposed retrofits to assess their technical suitability, operational risks, and potential performance impacts.
- Troubleshoot voltage regulation, frequency response, real power, and reactive power distribution issues, particularly where inverter behavior interacts with site conditions or grid requirements.
- Coordinate retrofit rollouts across multiple sites, tracking affected assets, assigned owners, deployment status, validation evidence, risks, and closure criteria.
- Use Excel, Smartsheet, or comparable tools to maintain issue trackers, retrofit schedules, deployment dashboards, and corrective action reports.
- Communicate technical findings, recommendations, risks, and progress updates clearly to vendors, site teams, engineering stakeholders, and management.
- Ensure all troubleshooting and corrective actions comply with applicable safety protocols, engineering standards, and organizational policies.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- At least five years of experience in renewable energy, battery energy storage systems, or a closely related technical field.
- Strong knowledge of inverter operation, dispatch controls, firmware and software behavior, control logic, and hardware design considerations.
- Experience diagnosing inverter or BESS performance issues using operational data, event logs, and technical evidence.
- Understanding of power systems, including voltage control, frequency response, and real and reactive power behavior in grid-connected environments, is preferred.
- Proven experience coordinating corrective actions or retrofit deployments across multiple sites, including schedule management, stakeholder follow-up, progress tracking, risk assessment, and closure reporting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Smartsheet, or similar tools for technical issue tracking, deployment management, and reporting.
- Knowledge of SCADA protocols such as DNP3 and Modbus.
- Familiarity with industrial communication networks and technologies, including fiber optics, network switches, and TCP/IP.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to investigate complex technical problems and manage multiple issues simultaneously.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, initiative, and consistent follow-through on technical deliverables.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical findings and recommendations to diverse stakeholders.
- A collaborative mindset and commitment to safety, quality, ethical practices, innovation, and sustainability.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 20% of the time, including occasional travel on short notice.
