United Kingdom - TamworthFull-time

Greenergy is a national UK fuel supplier and a leading European manufacturer of waste-based renewables. To deliver fuel to our customers, we have a 24/7 in-house haulage operation made up of over 650 drivers and a fleet of over 250 tankers. Greenergy Flexigrid manages over 500 deliveries per day and operates out of over 20 depots nationwide, making over 182,000 deliveries to 3,100 customers each year.

We’re looking for a confident, practical leader to take responsibility for the safe and efficient running of our night fuel logistics operation in Tamworth.

You’ll support two night teams, helping them deliver operational plans, respond to disruption and maintain high standards of safety, service and performance.

You’ll also work closely with the day team to improve handovers, communication and consistency across shifts.

The role is not a permanent night shift.
You’ll work five days out of seven, with flexibility to plan your hours around the needs of the operation. This means spending meaningful time with the night teams while also keeping regular contact with the day operation; you won’t routinely work the full 18:00–06:00 shift.

You’ll bring sound judgement, strong people-management skills and experience in a fast-paced operational setting. Fuel or tanker experience would be useful, but relevant leadership experience from another complex transport or logistics environment will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership

  • Take overall responsibility for the safe, efficient and effective running of the night fuel logistics operation.
  • Provide visible leadership to the night teams and ensure appropriate management presence across the operation.
  • Ensure operational plans are delivered while responding effectively to changes, disruption and emerging priorities.
  • Maintain a strong focus on service, productivity, operational performance and resource utilisation.
  • Make timely operational decisions, escalating significant risks or issues where appropriate.
  • Ensure effective handovers between day and night operations, with clear communication of priorities, risks and outstanding actions.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the wider logistics operation to improve end-to-end performance.
  • Act as the management escalation point for night-time staffing, breakdowns, VORs, delayed or failed deliveries, customer or terminal issues, driver welfare and other disruption.
  • Ensure that operational records are accurate and completed promptly in the relevant systems, including handovers, incidents, defects, dropped loads, LOBs, service failures and actions arising during the night.

People Leadership & Development

A significant part of this role is about developing people, not simply managing the shift.

  • Lead, coach and develop the respective 4-on, 4-off night teams, creating a positive, accountable and high-performing culture.
  • Build strong relationships with colleagues across both day and night operations.
  • Regularly assess capability within the teams and identify opportunities for training, coaching and upskilling.
  • Develop team members so that they have the confidence and capability to make effective operational decisions.
  • Support the development of future team leaders and managers, strengthening succession and resilience within the operation.
  • Set clear expectations and hold individuals and teams accountable for performance and behaviours.
  • Recognise strong performance while addressing performance or conduct concerns promptly and fairly.
  • Support attendance, performance, conduct and return-to-work processes in line with company policy, involving the appropriate line manager or HR support where required.
  • Encourage collaboration between shifts and ensure that day and night colleagues operate as one team rather than separate functions.

Safety & Compliance

Safety is fundamental within a fuel logistics environment. You'll be expected to:

  • Champion a strong safety culture and ensure that safety remains the first consideration in operational decision-making.
  • Ensure colleagues operate in accordance with relevant company procedures, transport requirements and industry standards.
  • Pay particular attention to driver hours and working-time compliance, ADR and site requirements, vehicle and trailer defects, safe loading and delivery practices, and the escalation of any safety-critical concern.
  • Maintain high standards of operational discipline and compliance.
  • Identify and address unsafe practices, operational risks and recurring issues.
  • Ensure incidents and near misses are appropriately managed, investigated and followed through to completion.
  • Promote continuous improvement by ensuring lessons from incidents and operational challenges are shared across teams.

Performance & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor operational KPIs and use performance information to identify areas requiring attention.
  • Understand the root causes behind service failures, inefficiencies or recurring operational issues and implement sustainable improvements.
  • Work with the teams to improve ways of working rather than relying solely on management intervention.
  • Drive consistency in standards and processes across both 4-on, 4-off night teams.
  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity, service, communication and operational resilience.
  • Ensure actions and improvements agreed during the night operation are effectively communicated to the day management team and vice versa.
  • Produce or contribute to a concise daily night-management summary covering performance, risks, incidents, people matters, unresolved actions and priorities for the incoming team.

Working Pattern

You'll work 5 days out of 7, supporting two night teams operating a 4-on, 4-off pattern between 18:00 and 06:00. The role requires flexibility rather than a fixed requirement to work throughout the entire night shift. The successful candidate will be expected to manage their working hours intelligently to ensure they:

  • Maintain strong visibility with both night teams.
  • Spend meaningful time within the live night operation.
  • Have regular crossover with the day operation and management team.
  • Build effective relationships across shifts.
  • Are present during key operational periods where their leadership adds the greatest value.

This flexibility is designed to enable you to lead the whole operation, rather than becoming isolated from the wider management team by working exclusively overnight.

Personal Attributes

We are looking for a strong operational leader who combines sound decision-making with a genuine interest in developing people.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience leading teams within a fast-paced transport, logistics, distribution or similarly operational environment.
  • Strong people-management and coaching skills.
  • The ability to lead teams working different shift patterns and create consistency between them.
  • A strong understanding of operational performance and how to translate KPIs into meaningful action.
  • A safety-first mindset and experience working within a regulated or compliance-led environment.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • The confidence to make decisions in a time-critical operational environment.
  • The ability to remain calm and provide clear leadership when dealing with disruption or competing priorities.
  • A proactive approach to developing people and building capability within teams.
  • The flexibility required to work across day/night boundaries and provide leadership when the operation needs it most.

Benefits:

  • Competitive compensation: Enjoy a competitive salary, enhanced by a discretionary bonus scheme that rewards both business and individual performance.
  • Private medical insurance: Prioritise your health with comprehensive private medical insurance, including access to online GP services from AXA for you and your family.
