emlyon tech school invites applications for a teaching-track position at Associate Professor level in Applied Mathematics. We seek an experienced educator who can build strong mathematical foundations across the BSc and MSc programs and connect them to programming, modelling and decision-making.
emlyon tech school combines science, technology and business, with a focus on using technology and artificial intelligence to address practical problems and support decision-making. Learning is by doing: company projects, hands-on courses, small cohorts. The school is building a dedicated faculty, with strong connections to emlyon business school and to academic and industry partners.
The position
The role focuses on teaching, course development and student supervision, with a substantial teaching load in line with the teaching track. The successful candidate will help shape the mathematical curriculum of new programs and develop applied courses and projects linking mathematics to technology, engineering and business decisions.
The position is open at Associate Professor level. It starts in May 2027, with first courses delivered from September 2027, and is based at the Paris campus.
The successful candidate will:
- Design and deliver mathematics courses at BSc level, including calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics and introductory optimisation.
- Contribute to MSc teaching in areas such as mathematical modelling, optimisation, stochastic methods, numerical analysis and the mathematical foundations of machine learning, according to their expertise.
- Connect mathematical concepts to computational implementation, and design assignments and teaching resources using programming, simulation, real data and problems developed with companies.
- Supervise student projects and dissertations, and work with colleagues and industry partners on applied learning activities.
- Participate in curriculum development and the academic life of a new school.
Teaching will be delivered in English. Particular attention will be given to making mathematical concepts accessible while maintaining academic depth, and to building a coherent progression from undergraduate foundations to advanced applications.
Candidate profile
Applicants should hold a PhD in Applied Mathematics or a closely related discipline, with a strong mathematical background and substantial higher education teaching experience appropriate to an Associate Professor appointment.
We welcome candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Mathematical optimisation and operations research.
- Probability, statistics and stochastic modelling.
- Numerical analysis and scientific computing.
- Dynamical systems, control and simulation.
- Mathematical foundations of machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Candidates should demonstrate teaching excellence, versatility across foundational mathematics beyond their immediate specialism, and proficiency in scientific programming, preferably Python. They should have a proven ability to design courses, develop assessments and support students with different levels of mathematical preparation.
We particularly welcome experienced educators from engineering schools, university institutes of technology or comparable institutions. Candidates should be able to guide students from a practical problem to a mathematical formulation, a computational solution and a critical assessment of the results.
Experience collaborating with companies, including student projects, consulting or applied studies, would be an asset. Peer-reviewed publications and other scholarly contributions are valued as complementary evidence of expertise. Selection will prioritise teaching quality, breadth and the ability to develop applied courses and projects.
Additional requirements
- Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines in a growing international school.
- Capacity to contribute to institutional service, including program coordination, curriculum design and external representation.
- Fluency in English and experience teaching in English. French is an asset but is not required.
- Willingness to be based in Paris or the surrounding area.
Performance evaluation will primarily reflect teaching quality, student supervision, curriculum development and institutional service, in line with the teaching track. Applied projects, teaching resources and other intellectual contributions will support these activities.
We strongly encourage people of all backgrounds (gender, ethnic background, nationality) to apply.
Salary and conditions are competitive and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Academic environment
Joining emlyon tech school at an early stage offers the opportunity to shape its mathematical curriculum, teaching practices and applied student projects. As part of the wider emlyon community, the successful candidate will join a vibrant faculty of more than 200 professors across emlyon business school, emlyon tech school and emlyon london interdisciplinary school.
