The Role

You will own the mechanical design of our dextrous hand, the subsystem that determines what our robots can actually do. You will take it from design through prototyping, testing, and production, working alongside electrical, firmware, and ML engineers.

This is a hands-on role for an engineer energized by hard tradeoffs: torque density versus size, backdrivability versus stiffness, dexterity versus durability.

What You'll Do

  • Own the mechanical design of the hand: fingers, joints, direct-drive actuation, transmissions, and structure.

  • Design for extreme packaging density, routing actuation, power, and sensing through a wrist and fingers with almost no volume to spare.

  • Run the analysis that backs the design: kinematics, FEA, tolerance stacks, fatigue, and mass budgets.

  • Design for durability under contact and impact, and build the test program that proves it.

  • Build and test prototypes yourself, and iterate fast.

  • Drive designs through EVT, DVT, and PVT with manufacturing partners in Japan and overseas.

  • Work directly with electrical, firmware, and ML engineers to make the hand work as part of the whole robot, not just as a part.

What We’re Looking For

  • Track record designing precision electromechanical systems: robotics, surgical devices, prosthetics, drones, or similar.

  • Deep experience with miniature mechanisms: small-scale transmissions, bearings, and actuation in severely constrained packaging.

  • Fluent in SolidWorks (or equivalent), confident in producing production drawings, GD&T, and BOMs.

  • Strong fundamentals: mechanism design, structural mechanics, kinematics, materials, tolerancing.

  • You've taken at least one product from prototype to mass production and can talk about what broke and what you'd do differently.

  • Comfortable on the shop floor assembling, measuring, and debugging hardware.

Bonus Points

  • Dextrous hand, gripper, or prosthetic hand design.

  • Direct-drive or quasi-direct-drive actuation, and backdrivable mechanism design.

  • Integration of tactile or force sensing into mechanical structures.

  • Cable, flex, and harness routing through articulated joints.

  • Experience managing overseas manufacturing or leading a small mechanical team.
