We have grand ambitions to create technology that will influence industry around the world. About the Role

Carbon is hiring a Staff Systems Engineer to help design and build the next generation of additive manufacturing systems. You'll join a small, tight-knit engineering team tackling hard, cross-disciplinary problems across the full product lifecycle of our printers and accessories, from early development through sustaining engineering on systems already in the field.

Note: This role is based in our Sunnyvale, CA office and would require 5 days/week in the office.

You will…

  • Own Systems engineering across the full product lifecycle, from early concept through release and sustaining work on launched products.
  • Lead requirements development, functional KPI derivation, system integration, and testing for product and feature releases.
  • Partner closely with cross-functional engineering teams across Electrical, Firmware, Software, Optics, Mechanical, and Materials from requirements through prototyping, integration, test, and release.
  • Become an expert on the system's requirements, design, and behavior, analyzing design options, running design reviews, writing and executing test plans, and troubleshooting issues as they arise.
  • Write and maintain the documentation that enables the rest of the company to build on your work.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Product support, and Customer service to make sure the infrastructure and processes are ready for what you're shipping.

You have…

  • B.S. in Engineering or a related technical field.
  • 7+ years developing complex, multi-disciplinary systems.
  • Strong systems intuition for how mechanical, electrical, software, and materials choices interact and where the failure modes hide.
  • Comfort working across mechanical, electrical, and software/scripting domains to develop, integrate, and test equipment.
  • Hands-on experience writing test plans, building test fixtures, and running tests at both the subsystem and system level.
  • Able to analyze large, messy datasets, draw out what matters, and communicate findings clearly to a broader audience.
  • Successfully took a design from concept through to production.

Nice to have

  • Experience translating top-level product requirements into detailed specifications for complex electro-mechanical systems, ideally capital equipment.
  • Experience identifying, qualifying, and managing turnkey suppliers.
  • Familiarity with safety and reliability standards for industrial or laboratory equipment.
  • Comfort using statistical methods for reliability testing and validating system performance.
  • Scripting and UI development for automated test tools involving motion control, sensors, or machine vision.
  • Worked in a production environment, comfortable with technicians on the manufacturing floor and in the lab.

You do not need to match every listed expectation to apply for this position. Here at Carbon, we know that diverse perspectives foster the innovation we need to be successful, and we are committed to building a team that encompasses a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and skills.
