As a Magnetics Design Engineer you will design MV-isolated MFT/HFT transformers and DAB/CLLC inductors, owning insulation, loss and thermal performance for the stage. You will solve core/winding-loss, leakage-inductance, insulation and partial-discharge problems using FEA (ANSYS Maxwell) across candidate materials. You will ensure design meets converter operating requirements with PE and align magnetic interfaces to thermal, mechanical, PCB and manufacturing through prototype iterations.
About AIS
AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Key job responsibilities
Transformer & inductor design:
- Design high-frequency/medium-frequency MV-isolated transformers for the SST.
- Design inductors and magnetic components required by DAB/CLLC and related converter stages.
- Evaluate nanocrystalline, ferrite and other suitable magnetic materials.
- Optimize winding structure, leakage inductance, insulation and parasitics.
Analysis & optimization:
- Perform core-loss and magnetic-loss calculations.
- Use FEA tools such as ANSYS Maxwell to optimize electromagnetic behavior.
- Analyze thermal performance and interfaces with liquid-cooling/mechanical systems.
- Balance efficiency, size, insulation and manufacturability.
Integration:
- Work closely with power-electronics engineers to meet converter operating requirements.
- Coordinate magnetic interfaces with mechanical, thermal, PCB and manufacturing teams.
- Support prototype builds, measurements and design iterations.
SST System Alignment:
- Own insulation design of MFT/HFT components as a primary design constraint, including dielectric stress, creepage/clearance interfaces, partial-discharge risk, winding construction and coordination with the system insulation strategy.
- Support scaling of the magnetic architecture toward system multi-MW product configurations while optimizing efficiency, thermal performance, leakage inductance and manufacturability.
A day in the life
As a Magnetics Design Engineer, your primary focus is designing MV-isolated medium-frequency transformers and high-frequency inductors for our Solid State Transformer initiative. You'll spend your day moving between detailed electromagnetic analysis and collaborative problem-solving.
You might start by using ANSYS Maxwell to optimize winding structures and analyze core losses for a new transformer design, then shift to evaluating how nanocrystalline or ferrite materials perform under your specific operating conditions. You'll examine thermal interfaces with our cooling systems and coordinate with power electronics engineers to ensure your magnetic design meets converter requirements. Later, you could be reviewing prototype measurements with the manufacturing team, identifying where design iterations are needed to balance efficiency, size, and producibility.
Your work spans the full design lifecycle—from initial material evaluation and electromagnetic optimization through prototype validation and scaling considerations. You'll regularly engage with mechanical, thermal, and PCB teams to align magnetic interfaces across disciplines, ensuring your designs integrate seamlessly into the larger system architecture.
