Japan's print book supply chain meets new challenges one after another: new constraints and rising costs across the existing logistics network, broadening reader preferences, and shifts in the economy and in how people buy. Even in this fast-changing environment, the Strategic Supply Chain Management team in Amazon's Books organization works with stakeholders inside and outside Amazon, every day, to deliver on one mission: readers get the book they want, when they want it.
Our team sets and executes the strategy for print book inventory and logistics. We work across Amazon and with external stakeholders including publishers, distributors, warehouses, and transportation providers. As an Associate Strategic Supply Chain Manager, you will join a team dedicated to supporting publishers' inventory management. You will work closely with an assigned group of publishers (three to four per role), identify supply chain problems centered on inventory and logistics, and own the solution end to end, from design through execution. You will collaborate with teams across Amazon to improve both the customer buying experience and our publishers' business. As a rule, this position does not include eBooks in its scope.
Why you will love this role:
You analyze inventory, forecasting, and logistics data yourself, and own improvement initiatives from idea through execution.
Your work connects directly to outcomes customers feel: fewer out-of-stock titles, delivery on release day, and faster shipping speed.
You engage with the structure of Japan's book distribution industry, and discuss decisions directly with publisher leadership.
You are first to take on problems with no precedent, where your own analysis and action move the result.
We are looking for a customer-focused, driven, and analytical leader who sees change as an opportunity rather than a threat, and who finds and acts on problems without being asked.
Key job responsibilities
As an Associate Strategic Supply Chain Manager, you will own the inventory strategy for an assigned group of publishers (three to four per role). You will grow selection, reduce out-of-stock titles, and drive supply chain efficiency, so that customers get a best-in-class buying experience and the business grows revenue and margin. Covering all aspects of inventory planning and operational management for your publishers is the foundation of this job. Building on what you learn there, you will also help improve the metrics the whole team owns, such as out-of-stock rate, and take part in key projects and in initiatives that run across the Books organization.
Key job responsibilities:
Build demand forecasting, ordering, and inventory level plans for your publishers, and drive improvement in out-of-stock rate and inventory turns.
Identify supply chain problems at your publishers, and own improvement initiatives from design through execution.
Support your publishers in improving their operations, including delivery lead time, order confirmation, and inventory data exchange.
Build efficient and scalable supply chain operations that reduce fixed and variable costs.
Understand and apply Amazon's internal buying and ordering systems and processes, and propose improvements to them.
Raise the accuracy and speed of your work through data analysis, automation, and Kaizen.
On this team, we expect you to look past the boundaries of your assigned scope and reach for whatever the team's results require. Leaders at Amazon never say "that's not my job." Depending on team and program circumstances, you may take on metric improvements beyond your assigned publishers, key projects, or work outside the scope described above, either temporarily or on an ongoing basis. For someone who wants to widen their own remit, this is an environment with a lot of room to grow.
At Amazon, you'll work alongside the latest AI and GenAI tools that are increasingly woven into how teams operate: from AI-powered capabilities that accelerate decision-making, to Generative AI that helps you focus on work that truly matters. You'll have opportunities and resources to develop AI fluency at your own pace, with continuous learning built into the culture.
A day in the life
Your days move back and forth between conversations with your publishers and analysis of the data behind them. Your direct clients are the publishers you are assigned to, and your ultimate customers are the readers waiting for their books. Your publishers are the center of the work, though part of your week may also go to improving the metrics the whole team owns and to initiatives that run across the Books organization.
At your publishers, your counterparts are the teams responsible for inventory, logistics, and sales. Inside Amazon, you work most closely with the other members who cover publishers and with the members of the Strategic Supply Chain Management team. Within the Books organization, you work with account managers, sales growth consultants, merchandising and product planning, and Marketing. You also engage day to day with our fulfillment centers, Transportation, forecasting and technology teams, Finance, and your counterparts in other countries.
The problems you solve include finding and removing the causes of out-of-stock titles, securing inventory ahead of new release dates, improving forecast accuracy, and taking inefficiency out of the delivery process.
A typical day or week:
Review metrics for your publishers, including out-of-stock rate, inventory levels, and delivery performance, and identify the cause of anything that looks off.
Extract data and run a deep dive analysis to quantify the problem and form a hypothesis.
Design an action plan and schedule from that hypothesis, draft the materials for your publishers and internal stakeholders, and take them through review.
Respond to inquiries from your publishers, and make day-to-day decisions on inventory and delivery.
Configure and run demand forecasting, ordering, and inventory settings in Amazon's internal systems.
Share progress in regular meetings with your publishers, and agree on what to tackle next.
Work on analysis and initiatives that improve the metrics the whole team owns, beyond your own publishers.
Take part in projects that run across the Books organization, and in improving and automating how the team works.

About the Books organization
We believe reading is essential for a healthy society. Our mission is to inspire readers by making it easy to read more and to get more out of reading.
The mission of the Strategic Supply Chain Management team, where this role sits, is to deliver the books our customers want, at the time they want them: the right products, in the right quantities, in the right place, at the right time.
Japan's print book supply chain is at a turning point. Structural problems are growing that incremental improvement alone will not solve, and a shared view is forming across the industry that significant change is needed. That also means there is no shortage of opportunity to improve things for customers. In particular, much room remains to use technology such as AI models to automate work across supply chain and inventory management, and to raise what we deliver to customers.
Three things define how our team works. Each of us owns the decisions for our own publishers. We put data, not instinct, at the base of our discussions. And we help each other across the boundaries of assignments and job families.
This is work that takes a business most people assume will always be there, but which in fact faces real structural challenges, and turns it into something sustainable. We are looking for someone who will take that on with a positive outlook, strong ownership, and teamwork.
