About Aboon
Setting up a 401(k) shouldn't be the hardest thing a business ever does. But retirement plan administration is complex, fragmented, and manual — and it slows down both business owners and the advisors who serve them. Aboon was founded to change that.
We're an AI-native third-party administrator (TPA) that makes it easy for advisors to offer 401(k)s and other retirement products by pairing streamlined workflows with dedicated human service. Backed by leading investors including Bain Capital and Edward Jones Ventures, we bring decades of experience building for advisors and the retirement industry. We're looking for exceptional, mission-driven people to build it with us.
About the role
As a Senior Plan Administrator, Compliance Services, you’ll perform the advanced technical compliance work behind the retirement plans served by Aboon, including testing, contributions, government filings, and consulting on advanced plan design and compliance topics.
Working alongside our Relationship Managers and Plan Administration team, you’ll handle advanced plan testing and corrections, peer review team work, and serve as a trusted technical expert on escalated plan matters — while continually improving the systems the team relies on and actively identifying opportunities for automation.
What you’ll do
Compliance Testing and Contributions
Independently perform annual nondiscrimination and compliance testing (e.g., ADP/ACP, 410(b), 401(a)(4), 414(s), top-heavy) and monitor 402(g), 415, and 404 limits
Calculate employer contributions across pro rata, integrated, and new comparability formulas
Determine compensation for testing and contribution purposes, including self-employed income calculations
Determine correction methods for failed tests and calculate the corrections, including ADP/ACP refunds and QNEC or QMAC contributions
Monitor compliance deadlines and deliverables across the annual cycle
Data Management and Reconciliation
Review incoming census and payroll data, resolving discrepancies independently
Reconcile contribution discrepancies and recordkeeper asset statements
Keep internal databases, client records, and task management systems current
Escalate systemic data issues to the Plan Administration Lead
Government Filings and Audit Support
Prepare and review Forms 5500 with applicable schedules, 5558, 5330, and 8955-SSA
Prepare filings for complex plans and support the Plan Administration Lead and Relationship Managers in responding to auditor questions
Support IRS and DOL examinations, correspondence, and client-initiated audits
Corrections and Non-Routine Work
Identify and analyze compliance issues, including operational and demographic failures, missed amendments, and late contributions and recommend appropriate corrective methods
Raise document failures, missed amendments, and any matter requiring a VCP, DFVCP, or VFCP submission to the Manager, Documents & Technical Services, and prepare the supporting calculations and documentation for those filings; execute and document corrections in line with Aboon's correction methodology and internal guidelines
Partner with 3(16) Services to resolve payroll issues, calculate corrective amounts, and facilitate processing of required corrective contributions
Manage plan terminations and prepare specialized reporting as requested
Support plan mergers, acquisitions, and takeovers, including coverage testing and transition of prior-year data
Draft and review template and custom client communications
Technical Consulting
Serve as plan compliance expert for Relationship Managers, plan sponsors, financial advisors, and independent auditors, participating in client meetings as needed
Monitor and manage incoming service requests from Relationship Managers and Plan Consultants, as well as items identified through recordkeeper communications, resolving or routing them as needed
Research and resolve advanced plan design and regulatory questions escalated by Relationship Managers or internal stakeholders, and escalate document and qualification matters to the Manager, Documents & Technical Services
Translate technical compliance results into clear, actionable guidance for plan sponsors
Peer Review and Mentorship
Conduct peer review of technical work, client correspondence and reporting prepared by Plan Administrators, escalating complex cases to the Plan Administration Lead as needed
Coach and train Plan Administrators on testing methodologies, filing procedures, and internal workflows
Contribute technical expertise to process improvements, internal procedures, and training materials, including applying AI and automation where it improves the work
Provide back-up support for the Plan Administration Lead as needed, including escalations
Who you are
The right person is:
Technically fearless — a fact pattern you’ve never seen is interesting, not intimidating
Always looking for a better method — you test new tools against your own work and you assess where they help and where they don't
A translator — you explain complex concepts without jargon in a way that is relatable and approachable
Accountable — you own the quality and timeliness of your work and flag risks before they become problems
Generous with what you know — you train junior team members on the why behind the work, not just how to run the test
Curious about the rules — you follow regulatory changes closely, evaluate what they mean for our clients and plans, and help determine how they should be applied
What you bring
Required
7+ years of defined contribution plan administration experience with a heavy compliance focus
Deep working knowledge of ERISA Title I and Internal Revenue Code Sections 401(a), 401(k), 401(m), 410(b), 414(s), 415, and 416 as applied to defined contribution plans
Hands-on experience with advanced nondiscrimination testing techniques
Experience preparing and reviewing Forms 5500, 5330, and 8955-SSA
Ability to apply testing rules and plan document provisions accurately across varying plan designs
Advanced Excel skills, including troubleshooting data discrepancies and reconciling census information
Strong written and verbal communication, including explaining technical results to non-technical audiences
Proficiency with ftwilliam, Google Workspace, and task and project management software
Nice to have
Experience with DOL correction programs and submissions
Familiarity with ftwilliam and the servicing modules of major recordkeeping platforms
Hands-on experience with ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, or similar AI tools in day-to-day work
Holding or pursuing ASPPA QKA (or NIPA APA) or pursuing advanced ASPPA designations such as QKC, QPA, or CPC
