About Aboon

Setting up a 401(k) shouldn't be the hardest thing a business ever does. But retirement plan administration is complex, fragmented, and manual — and it slows down both business owners and the advisors who serve them. Aboon was founded to change that.

We're an AI-native third-party administrator (TPA) that makes it easy for advisors to offer 401(k)s and other retirement plans by pairing streamlined workflows with dedicated human service. Backed by leading investors including Bain Capital and Edward Jones Ventures, we bring decades of experience building for advisors and the retirement industry. We're looking for exceptional, mission-driven people to build it with us.

About the role

As a Plan Administrator, Technical Services, you'll handle the specialty work that sits outside the standard annual cycle: corrections, plan documents, technical projects, and the complex or edge-case matters the rest of the team escalates. You'll also take an active role in helping us shape and run plan administration for Aboon's Solo(k) business line.

You'll report to the Manager, Documents & Technical Services and work closely with Plan Administration, 3(16) Services, and Relationship Management. Success means the technical work is accurate and documented, and the team has somewhere to go when a plan doesn't fit the standard path — while improving the tools and automation the work runs on.

What you'll do

Corrections

  • Execute corrections under Aboon's correction methodology, including operational failures, missed deferrals, late contributions, and demographic failures

  • Calculate corrective contributions, lost earnings, corrective distributions, and document the basis for each correction

  • Prepare the supporting calculations, narratives, and exhibits for VCP, DFVCP, and VFCP submissions

  • Carry correction projects from diagnosis through completion, coordinating required contributions and client communications with Plan Administration and Relationship Management

  • Confirm corrections are reflected accurately on recordkeeper platforms and in plan records

Technical Support and Escalation

  • Research technical questions and write down the answer so the next person doesn't have to research it again

  • Escalate matters requiring a regulatory submission, a methodology decision, or outside ERISA counsel to the Manager, Documents & Technical Services

  • Provide coverage on complex work during peak periods

Solo(k) Services

  • Support plan administration for the Solo(k) book, including annual owner-only eligibility checks and compliance deadline monitoring across the annual cycle

  • Prepare and file Forms 5500-EZ

  • Maintain Solo(k) plan documents, amendments, and restatements

  • Review and process Solo(k) loans, withdrawals, distributions, and required minimum distributions in accordance with plan provisions, and coordinate Form 1099-R and related tax reporting

  • Handle Solo(k) plan terminations end to end

  • Monitor the book for plans losing owner-only status, complete the technical due diligence, and support conversion to a group 401(k) plan alongside Relationship Management and Plan Consulting

  • Serve as the internal technical resource on owner-only plan rules and Solo(k) workflows

  • Back up the Solo(k) request queue, resolving client and financial advisor questions within established service level agreements (SLAs)

Technical Projects

  • Support plan takeovers by reviewing inherited documents and amendments, identifying gaps, and scoping the correction work required

  • Support plan mergers, acquisitions, spin-offs, and terminations

  • Execute regulatory implementation projects, applying legislative and regulatory changes across the book

  • Prepare specialized reporting and contribution projections requested by Relationship Managers and plan sponsors

Process and Tooling

  • Write and maintain the procedures, templates, and checklists used for correction and document work

  • Write client-facing Help Center articles and FAQs from recurring technical questions, so answers scale past the person who found them

  • Apply AI and automation to technical work, and share what works with the rest of the team

  • Partner with product, design, and engineering to test and improve internal tooling for document and correction workflows

  • Contribute training content for Plan Administration and Relationship Management on recognizing failures early and knowing when to escalate

  • Monitor industry and regulatory developments affecting plan documents, corrections, and owner-only plans, and translate them into how we operate

Who you are

The right person is:

  • Diagnostic — you trace a failure back to what actually caused it before deciding how to fix it

  • Precise — corrections are unforgiving, so you make sure the math holds and the file shows why

  • Drawn to the odd ones — the plan that doesn't fit the template is the one you want to pick up

  • Comfortable switching gears — corrections, documents, Solo(k), and project work move in and out of your week and you keep the thread on all of them

  • Early to new tools — you'd rather find out whether AI can do the first pass than assume it can't

  • Generous with what you know — you write it down and share it so the answer outlives the question

What you bring

Required

  • 4+ years of defined contribution plan administration experience

  • Working knowledge of ERISA and the Internal Revenue Code as applied to defined contribution plans

  • Hands-on experience preparing or reviewing plan documents, amendments, and restatements

  • Familiarity with EPCRS and the correction methods available under it

  • Experience identifying operational and document failures and calculating corrective contributions and lost earnings

  • Experience preparing Forms 5500 and applicable schedules

  • Ability to read and interpret plan documents and apply provisions accurately across varying plan designs

  • Advanced Excel skills, including reconciling census and payroll data

  • Strong written communication, including documenting technical conclusions clearly

  • Proficiency with plan document software, Google Workspace, and task and project management software

Nice to have

  • Experience preparing VCP, DFVCP, or VFCP submissions

  • Experience with owner-only plans and Forms 5500-EZ

  • Experience with plan terminations, takeovers, mergers, and acquisitions

  • Experience processing distributions, loans, and required minimum distributions

  • Familiarity with ftwilliam and the servicing modules of major recordkeeping platforms

  • Hands-on experience with ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, or similar AI tools in day-to-day work

  • Holding or pursuing ASPPA QKA (or NIPA APA), or pursuing advanced ASPPA designations such as QKC, QPA, or CPC
